Four schools in Busia County have been closed indefinitely after learners were teargassed during the nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

According to the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Busia Branch Executive Secretary Moffat Okisai, the canisters were hurled at learners as police clashed with protesters.

A number of students were hurt including one who is feared to have been shot dead as two others from a local secondary school were rushed to the hospital after sustaining bullet wounds.

The schools affected by the closure are Our Lady of Mercy, Burumba, and St. Mathias Secondary schools as well as Lukonyi primary.
