Five people died and nine others injured on Tuesday evening, January 10, after a matatu they were travelling in rolled several times at Lurambi in Kakamega County.
The vehicle's rear tyre burst, causing it to hurtle off the road. The accident occurred on the Kakamega-Mumias Road near River Sasala.
Western Regional Traffic Police Commandant Joseph Mutiku told The Standard that the injured victims were taken to St. Mary's Mission Hospital in Mumias and the Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Bodies of the five victims were taken to St. Mary's Mission Hospital, Mumias mortuary, said Mutiku.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa said three of the nine injured victims have since been treated and discharged.
