Two killed several injured in Bungoma accident

Two people were killed and 33 others seriously injured in a grisly road accident at Namundi village in Bungoma West sub county Sunday morning.

The accident occurred after a Nairobi bound bus from Lwakhakha veered off the road and hit a boda boda rider killing a woman pilion passenger and her child on the spot.

Those injured including the driver of the bus and the boda boda rider were rushed to different hospitals in Bungoma where they are recuperating according to Bungoma West sub county police commander David Kandie.

He said eight victims were taken to Bungoma County Referral hospital, 16 are being treated at Korosiondet health facility, two at Cheptais Subcounty hospital and seven at Sirisia sub county hospital.

Mr Kandie said that bodies of the deceased were taken to Bungoma county Referral hospital Mortuary where they await postmortem

According to Mr Kandie, the bus wreckages were towed to Lwakhakha police station. "We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident," said the police boss.

Mr Kandie called on the bus users not to carry excess passengers despite many people travelling back to major towns and cities from Western.

"Let us be vigilant and double check our vehicles before bordering them, safety begins with you, don't accept to board an overloaded vehicle while travelling," Kandie warned travelers.

Sirisia MP John Waluke who visited the scene said traffic police and players in the transport sector must find ways of mitigating road accidents along Lwakhakha - Chwele road.

"The relevant authorities should move with speed and find a way of mitigating perennial along this busy road, we can't sit back and watch as people die," said Waluke.
