A suspect was arraigned in an Eldoret court to face charges of impersonating Dr Wilson Aruasa, the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital chief executive.
Ezra Kiptoo Saina, alias Daniel Rono, is alleged to have intended to defraud the public by impersonation on October 13, 2022. He was accused of committing the offence by pretending that he can offer them jobs at the hospital.
The police say the suspect allegedly opened Facebook account and WhatsApp page, on which he posted Dr Aruasa's photos with different contacts. He used the photos to convince people that their employment deal was genuine. Dr Aruasa is one of the complainants.
According to Isaac Kosgey, a police officer at Naiberi Police Station, the suspect was arrested at Annex estate following a tip from complainants.
Kosgey they intercepted him while in possession of two mobile phones he had allegedly been using to defraud people.
"Similar cases had been reported to our station sometimes back and after the latest offense, we acted promptly and managed to arrest him. It is claimed that he calls his victims and asks them to talk to his personal assistant, but changes his voice," the detective said.
The phony personal assistant would conduct interviews before asking victims to forward their certificates and other relevant documents.
It was also claimed that the suspect demands documents Kenya Revenue Authority and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission clearance certificates.
The accused denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Christine Menya. The case will be heard on November 28, 2022.
