A fire has broken out on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest and the world's second-tallest mountain.

Media reports say the fire started on Friday, October 21, at one of the mountain's popular ascending routes.

The Citizen of Tanzania reported that the fire was raging near Karanga camp located at about 3, 963 metres altitude.

Efforts to put out the fire, whose source is yet to be established, are ongoing.

The Conservation Commissioner of the Tanzania Parks Agency (Tanapa), William Mwakilema, said that several groups including, including firefighters, wildlife park rangers and police are working together to contain the fire.

The Friday night blaze comes two years after another fire broke out in the Whona area, a rest centre for climbers using Mandara and Horombo.

Hundreds of firefighters, residents and students in the area joined the effort to battle the blaze, which rose to almost 6,000 metres (20,000 feet) above sea level.
