Ramadhan Kajembe's son charged with assaulting sister over polls

A son of former Changamwe MP, the late Ramadhan Kajembe, has been charged in court with allegedly assaulting his step-sister during the August 9 elections.

Mr Mohamed Kajembe was arraigned on Monday before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku to face charges of assaulting Mrs Thureya Salim Idd, the wife of Jomvu MP Badi Twalib.

According to the court papers, the accused allegedly attacked Mrs Thureya as she left the polling centre at the Jomvu Primary School in Jomvu Ward.

It is alleged that the accused pelted stones at her step-sister and damaged the left rear windscreen of the vehicle she was using.

The vehicle belongs to Mr Ismail Kuno Maalim Mohammed, states the court papers.

He damaged the windscreen valued at Sh20,000, according to the court papers, but Mrs Thureya was not injured.

In addition, Kajembe was also charged with willfully damaging the left side mirror of another vehicle. The side mirror valued at Sh7, 500 was of a vehicle owned by Ali Shafi.

The assault and electoral offense were reportedly committed during the just concluded election on August 9.

The accused spend the weekend at Changamwe Police Station as efforts to release him on bail were futile.

During the court session, some people who were alleged to be Thureya's family members wanted to withdraw the case.

However, the magistrate said it is the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) that can decide on whether the matter can be withdrawn at this stage.

Kajembe, who is an employee of NEMA, was released on Sh50,000 cash bail or an alternative bond of Sh100,000 with a surety.

The case will be mentioned in September.
