Vote counting halted at two tallying centres after crowd turns unruly

Police forced to disperse crowd in Kapenguria, West Pokot County [The Standard]

Vote counting has been suspended at two tallying centres in Starehe and Kapenguria constituencies respectively.

Chaos erupted at the Jamhuri tallying centre in Starehe Constituency, Nairobi county on Wednesday, August 10, after youth demanded to know the whereabouts of two extra ballot boxes.

The Standard has established that a section of youth protested after two unknown individuals brought an unsealed ballot box to the station.

Vote counting in the area has been suspended momentarily.

The two individuals, who took the ballot boxes to the station, have since been taken in for questioning by police officers.

In West Pokot County, police officers at Nasokol tallying centre in Kapenguria Constituency were forced to shoot in the air to disperse a group of rowdy youth.

The youth, who are allegedly aligned to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, stormed Nasokol tallying centre in the county protesting that the tallying process was too slow.

"The youth had tried to gain entry during the day but were stopped by the police," a source told The Standard.

Elsewhere, in Mogotio tallying centre, Baringo County, blackout was experienced when the Returning Officer was reading out the results.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was forced to use solar panels for the process to continue.
