One person was killed and four others escaped death by a whisker after a fuel tanker rammed into houses at Kebirigo in Nyamira County.

The tanker was heading to Nyamira town from Ikonge before the driver lost control at Ibara along the Ekerenyo-Kebirigo highway before it hit a coffin shop and damaged neighbouring houses and kiosks.

A woman who operates a kiosk next to the coffin shop died while her four-year-old child sustained injuries.

The woman was trapped under the wreckage of the tanker for more than four hours before she was finally retrieved and confirmed dead by Nyamira North Police Commander Patrick Ngeiywa.

Ngeiywa said the tanker belongs to a petroleum trading company and was heading to Kisii Town.

The injured child, his grandmother, the driver and his conductor are receiving treatment at Nyamira County Referral Hospital.
