Sharon Otieno murder: Clinical Officer admits he faked medical records for Governor Obado’s PA

A clinical officer has narrated how he faked medical records for Migori Governor Mr Okoth Obado’s personal assistant on the day the county chief’s girlfriend was murdered.

Mr Cliff Momanyi, a clinical officer based at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, presented copies of the forged medical records in court.

In the papers, he had indicated that the governor’s assistant, Mr Michael Oyamo, had been attacked by unknown people and required specialised treatment.

Momanyi said the forgeries happened on September 4, 2018, the same day the body of Mr Obado’s murdered girlfriend Ms Sharon Otieno was discovered at Kodera Forest in Oyugis town.

“The patient (Mr Michael Oyamo) did not even come to the hospital but I was requested to fill the medical records form in which I indicated he suffered accidental suffocation and strangulation by unknown people,” said Mr Momanyi.

Mr Obado, Mr Oyamo, and former Migori County clerk Mr Caspal Obiero are facing murder charges. They are alleged to have killed Ms Sharon and her seven-month unborn baby on September 3, 2018, at Kowade in Rachuonyo Sub-County within Homa Bay County.

By the time Ms Sharon was killed, she was a student at Rongo University. She was dating the Migori governor. DNA results presented in court showed Mr Obado was the biological father of Ms Sharon’s unborn child.

A police officer, Mr Willy Okoti, who testified previously told the court one of the protected witnesses had informed him that it was Mr Oyamo who had handed them over to the kidnappers on September 3, 2018, at Graca Hotel in Rongo town within Migori County.

According to the officer, Mr Oyamo met Ms Sharon and the witness at the hotel and requested that they board a vehicle to a different location. He testified that Ms Sharon and the witness entered the waiting vehicle while in the company of Mr Oyamo but after about 30m, Mr Oyamo alighted and called two other people who were standing beside the road to get in.

As soon as the two new strangers entered the vehicle, it sped towards Homa Bay town.

It was the last time Ms Sharon was seen alive.

Momanyi testified that on September 4, 2018, which was a day after Mr Oyamo is alleged to have met with Ms Sharon before her abduction, he received a call from his colleague based in Migori requesting that he assists in faking the medical report.

“My colleague asked me to help in filling a patient form for his friend indicating that he needed a referral and specialised treatment in Kisumu and that the patient had suffered strangulation from unknown people,” said Mr Momanyi.

He stated that since the actual patient (Mr Oyamo) was not present, he bought an outpatient medical card and proceeded to make the diagnosis.

Since Kisii Hospital had a computerised system for generating patients records, Dr Momanyi said he opted to use his personal laptop in which he gave Mr Oyamo an imaginary patient number and keyed in his other personal information as had been given to him.

His testimony was cut short after one of the defence lawyers representing Mr Oyamo fell ill during the proceedings, forcing trial Judge Cecilia Githua to adjourn the hearing until March 30.
