Building projects on island stopped till sewer system audit is carried out

All development projects in most parts of Mombasa Island have been stopped by the County Government to pave way for an audit of the port city's sewerage system.

According to Governor Hassan Ali Joho's administration, officers from the public health and safety wouldillegal raw sewerage connections.

In a notice dated January 10, this year, the county CEC Lands, Planning and Housing  Twafiq Balala said some of the raw sewerage line have illegally connected to storm water systems.

Twafiq did not however say when the audit will start. He said that no development projects would be allowed to continue in Majengo and Old Town wards in Mvita until the audit is done.

"Developers of new buildings were told to ensure that bio-digesters were installed," said Balala in the notice.

He ordered developers, consulting architects and engineers for new, ongoing and existing building developments to stop any works they are doing in the affected areas.

“The audit seeks to take corrective actions against illegal raw sewerage collection to storm water drainage in the above mentioned areas,” said Balala.  He announced that approval for development applications within Majengo and Old Town have also been suspended.
