Special needs school seeks varsity partnership

A special needs school in Thika wants to partner with Mount Kenya University to boost the morale of learners.

James Macharia, the principal of St Patrick Special School in Thika, appealed to the university management when students and staff from MKU led by vice-chancellor Deogratius Jaganyi visited the school during the International Day of the Persons Living with Disabilities.

Macharia said the school faced challenges, including an acute shortage of teaching staff. He said the partnership would see MKU students volunteer at the special needs.

Jaganyi said his university would support the institution by intensifying their new partnership with the school and Lions Club International, the main sponsors of St Patrick Special School.

He said the support being accorded to the school was within the University mandate of promoting the United Nations's aspiration of reducing inequalities.

The VC said, in the last two years, MKU had received close to 100 students living with disabilities from the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

He said MKU had appointed Dr Sera Kimaru to coordinate its programmes.
