Police are investigating a shooting in Changamwe, Mombasa County where unknown gunmen sprayed a car with over 20 bullets killing three people on Wednesday night.
Confirming the shooting, Changamwe police boss Mr David Mathews said the vehicle was northbound when its five occupants were ambushed and fired upon on April 22.
The assailants are said to have been trailing the vehicle in a Toyota Auris.
Mathews said the driver – James Mwangi - died on the spot while two other occupants succumbed to their injuries on Thursday morning while receiving treatment. The fourth is in critical condition while another fled the scene.
According to Mathews, five mobile phones, an extra car key, and several ATM cards - belonging to different individuals, were recovered from the car.
“James Mwangi, the owner of the car, died on the spot after the shooting. Two others succumbed to their injuries this morning. The fourth is in critical condition,’’ said Mathews.
The motive of the killing is still unclear.
The injured man is receiving treatment at Coast General Hospital under police watch, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital’s morgue.
