KCSE candidate explodes with anger after ‘mwakenya’ snatched during exam

A Form Four Student of Moi Kapcherop Girls’ Secondary School in Elgeyo-Marakwet County has been arrested alongside three schoolmates for alleged exam-cheating.  

The galled learner had attempted to attack a police officer, who caught her with short answer notes (mwakenya) during CRE Paper 2 KCSE examination on Monday, April 12.

“The student’s unbecoming behaviour forced the security officer to call for reinforcement,” a cop privy to the incident told Standard Digital on condition of anonymity.

The exasperated learner was, subsequently, contained.

The other three candidates were also caught in possession of ‘mwakenya’.

Also arrested alongside the students, were the school’s principal, exam supervisor and eight invigilators, who were taken into custody for alleged conspiracy to aid exam cheating.

A subsequent mass search in the dormitories yielded several mobile phones, ‘mwakenya’ notes and other material used in exam malpractice.

Elgeyo-Marakwet County Commissioner, Dr. Omar Ahmed, said the arrested students would write their remaining exams under police supervision.

“We are investigating whether the principal, supervisor and invigilators colluded with the students to engage in exam malpractice,” Ahmed told Standard Digital.

The arrested exam officials, who were released on free bond on Tuesday, April 13, were replaced by a new team, the county commissioner said.

“I want to warn exam officials planning to allow cheating that they will be smoked out,” said Ahmed.

On Tuesday, April 13, no strange incidents were reported as students sat KCSE tests at the institution.
