Sometimes all you really need is good thoughts to keep you going, something good to look forward to. And in fitness too, you need to have something that gets you shaking off your warm duvet to go out for a run or giving up coffee with your friends to dash to the gym. This could be the thought of a fitter body, better health, or simply looking great.

Few things will push you more than looking good while doing it. Stylish work outwear has become a billion-dollar industry, and fitness experts are cashing in too. You may think that it isn’t for you because of the price tag but you don’t have to worry about that. There are cheaper alternatives. You just need to know what to look out for. Here are some things to consider.

Stretch: What exercise are you doing? Does it require stretching and bending? If so, consider polyester or spandex. They both stretch comfortably. Most exercises require form-fitting clothes, but you don’t really want to feel constricted as you work out. Spandex and polyester are ideal but if you prefer natural fabrics, you can opt for cotton blends.

Durability: Workout wear needs to have some longevity. You don’t want to keep replacing it every month. If you can, invest in durable wear that will serve you for at least one year before replacing it. If you have two sets for use on alternate days, that will increase their overall wear.

Fabric: Cotton is your best bet for light workouts if you have a busy lifestyle. It gives off the less sweaty stench and if hard-pressed, you can attend your evening classes or meetups without assaulting anyone’s senses. The only downside to the fabric is that since it absorbs moisture when worn during really sweaty workouts, you will end up feeling the heavy dampness. You could opt for nylon, which is as quick-drying or polyester. It is comfortable but is known for its stink factor.

Breathability: You are bound to sweat during a workout. The last thing you need is to feel your clothes sticking on your back. Choose clothing with mesh panels and moisture-wicking features for maximum comfort. Moisture-wicking refers to the property of fabric to pull moisture from the body to the exterior of the fabric. Many wicking fabrics are made from polyester.

Safety: Much as you want to look cool during workouts, you should get gear that is protective too. Are you running miles outdoors or on the treadmill, or working out to a fitness DVD? You need to have shoes that cushion your feet. Shoes that have good shock absorbers to protect your ankles and knees. Also If you lift weights, wear protective gloves to protect your palms.
