MPs deny receiving summons over chaos

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and his Kandara counterpart Alice Wahome have denied being summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following the fracas that erupted in Murang'a on Sunday.

Yesterday, a group of youth brought business to a standstill at Kenol market as they held a demonstration carrying an empty coffin. Under Murang’a Youth and Peace Governance Forum, they condemned Sunday's incident in which two people were killed following confrontation between rival groups.

Led by Harun Gathuthi, Mungai Karanja and five MCAs, the group castigated the politicians out to use violence to intimidate their rivals.

Nyoro denied having received any summon to appear at Nyeri DCI offices.

“Nobody told me that I am needed at any police station. I was at home and my phone was on. I didn’t see anyone or receive any call summoning me,” he said.

Nyoro said the Inspector General’s statement implicating them in the mayhem was diversionary.

“I was so disappointed to hear that we are being implicated in the planning of the chaos as claimed by the IG. That was our meeting and we were hosting Deputy President (William Ruto). How could we disrupt our own meeting,” asked Nyoro.

Wahome said she was not hiding and that she was waiting to be summoned.

“I am waiting for the police to arrest me. I am ready for them because we know who were behind the chaos. It is unfortunate that we are sliding back to the old times of dictatorship,” said Wahome.

Yesterday, the county's leadership led by Governor Mwangi wa Iria urged politicians to engage in "mature politics".
