Balala asks Kenyans to explore local tourism

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Najib Balala (pictured), has asked Kenyans to embrace diverse tourism experiences.

Speaking during a recent visit to The Forest Adventure at Kereita in Kiambu County, Balala called on local tourists to explore the Magical Kenya Signature Experiences (MKSE) that are a cut above the traditional tourism offerings, as they offer an authentic and highly-personalised experience.

These were identified through an evaluation process in the first phase of identifying experiences that form part of the must–visit ventures in Kenya.

“It’s high time we looked beyond what we are conventionally used to and discover these hidden gems that are spread out across the country,” said Balala.

The CS took on the zip-lining and archery experience, which is part of the experiences offered at Kereita. Other offers include adventure activities such as foot golf, nature walks, forest rovers, and mountain biking.

He urged industry players to diversify attractive and affordable packages in a bid to woo more local tourists even as the government looks to revive a sector that has borne the brunt of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Today’s discerning traveller, both domestic and international, is seeking out travel destinations that deliver unique and authentic experiences which tap into their passion points," he said.

"We have a lot in this country that we can share. The industry has invested heavily but sometimes we need to do the small things that make a difference."

Kenya Tourism Board CEO Betty Radier, who had accompanied the CS, said the board looks forward to expanding the signature experiences to enable the sector remain relevant and much more competitive.

“Since we officially launched the MKSE initiative last year, our goal has been to promote Kenya’s diverse tourism offerings to the world. It is through such exceptional and authentic experiences that we hope to make Magical Kenya the to-go destination for the discerning traveller,” said Radier.

The afternoon of adventure was also graced by local area Member of Parliament, Jonah Mburu.
