Those with diabetes should stay at home, go out when necessary — Health CAS Dr Rashid Aman

Health CAS Dr Rashid Aman has urged those with diabetes to avoid unnecessary movement since they are twice as likely to require intensive care if they contract Covid-19.

While giving the daily Covid-19 updates, Dr Aman stated that over 50% of those who have succumbed to Coronavirus had pre-existing conditions.

“Diabetics are twice as likely to require intensive care. Obesity also pre-disposes people to ailments.

“Those with diabetes should stay home…go out only when necessary,” said Dr Aman.

On Saturday, Kenya recorded 375 new cases of Coronavirus, taking the national tally to 16643.

Out of the 375 cases, 229 are male while 146 are female.

Unfortunately, four more patients have succumbed to the virus. The number of fatalities now stands at 278.

On a more positive note, 128 recoveries were recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 7574.

The Ministry also stated that a number of bars have defying the guidelines issued and warned that their licenses will be revoked.

Director of Public Health Dr Francis Kuria said it is up to the public to take personal responsibility.

“Bars should be closed. If any is open, it is operating illegally… We cannot have a police officer for each bar. If your permit is withdrawn, do not blame anyone.

“Inside the bars-masks are done away with, social distancing disregarded…” he said.

On security guards being exposed to the virus, Dr Kuria urged them not to face individuals directly when checking temperature.

“If they keep to the containment measures, they will be safe. We urge them to follow guidelines as advised.

“Wearing a mask keeps one safe… As they take temperatures, we advise them to take from the side not the front of an individual,” he remarked.
