Woman who made Matiang’i queue speaks after court upheld sacking

Daizy Cherogony, a former security officer at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, on Friday, February 21, 2020, spoke for the first time.

According to a local newspaper, Cherogony said that Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, then Education CS was not on the priority list.

She further stated that it was after she asked Matiang’I to queue that he started to complain, an action that made her lose her job.

"When Matiang'i came, I asked him to line up just like others but he complained and that's why I was sacked allegedly over integrity issues," she said.

Cherogony had sued the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) for unlawfully dismissing her from her post and wanted to be compensated financially.

According to justice Nzioki wa Makau, the mishandling of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, then Education CS, was sufficient reason for her to be dismissed.

“She was heard in terms of Section 41 and her rights under Article 41(1) safeguarded”

“Since there was cause for the dismissal and basis for a summary dismissal on account of gross misconduct, the suit is only fit for dismissal,” said the Judge.

In their defense, KAA said that, as an employee, she was required to be disciplined, respectful and courteous to clients.
