Burial of woman killed in US delayed

The family of a woman shot dead in Seattle, US, recently will have to wait longer to fly her body home due to travel hitches.

Janet Oyuga (pictured) was to be buried yesterday, but her body did not arrive from the US.

Her sister, Sophie Oyuga, said funds had already been raised to fly the body home and the only thing left was to get a flight.

Janet and her sister Angela were attacked by an elderly woman they had given refuge in their house. Angela survived the attack but suffered serious injuries.

“They are still working on some logistics on the other side. They have not been able to get a flight,” Sophie said. The burial was to take place last Saturday at their parents' home in Gem, Siaya County.

Sophie said their friends were doing their best to have the body flown to Kenya despite the challenges.

However, the family says they are not sure when Janet’s remains will be flown to Kenya.

Janet’s mother, Sarah Oyuga, confirmed the postponement of her daughter’s burial, but was optimistic it would take place as soon as possible.

“We cannot tell when the body will be flown here for burial," said the mother, adding that her daughter Angela would not be flying home.

“She will not be coming because she is still sick,” she said.

Janet’s family had high hopes that her remains would land in Kenya and a requiem mass held on Friday before she could be laid to rest.

Sophie said a requiem mass was held in Seattle.

“A mass was held on the other side and we will still hold another mass here when the body arrives,” she said.

Beverly Jenne, who is said to have shot Janet and her sister Angela, later tried to commit suicide. She has been charged with second-degree murder and assault.

She had sold her home to the sisters who let her stay with them for awhile. She told police she feared the sisters were planning to evict her.
