Girl earns ‘B’ despite her dismal showing in KCPE

Even after scoring 194 marks in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam, Millicent Onyancha did not lose hope. And when the secondary school exam results were released, Millicent scored an impressive B-, thanks to her former school’s academic clinics.

At Riooga Mixed Secondary School in Nyamira County where she sat her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Millicent was the talk, alongside her other colleagues who shocked many by posting exemplary results.

Even teachers from her primary school, Nyainogu, were surprised to hear about the results.

Her mother, Vanice Nyamagera, a peasant farmer, could not believe the news that her daughter who had ‘failed’ in Class Eight had attained university entry grade.

“I just allowed her to join Form One halfheartedly. But God has helped her through,” said Ms Nyamagera.

Millicent is among over 50 others who qualified to join university from the sub-county school in Masaba North.

The school runs what is known as academic clinics where learners are put under intensive mentorship and tutelage on subjects and particular areas of weaknesses in academics.

School principal Job Rasugu said Millicent was admitted despite having low marks but due to her determination and dedication, she rose above those who may have scored higher marks in KCPE.
