Nyeri County government plans to start a menstrual hygiene programme as part of its social responsibility.
The programme, according to Governor Mutahi Kahiga, will target vulnerable girls and women who are not currently in school.
Kahiga said the program will involve issuing of sanitary towels, capacity building on personal hygiene, HIV and AID’s and financial literacy.
The beneficiaries will also be encouraged and assisted to form groups for business startups.
The governor spoke during the State of the County address at the county assembly on Thursday last week.
Through the special programmes department, the county Government also fully supported 40 boys living in the streets and from vulnerable homes to undergo the rite of passage in December.
They were also capacity built on personal hygiene, dangers of drugs and substance abuse, HIV and AIDS among others.
“My Government will continue to support vulnerable homes affected by poverty and social issues leading to disintegration of families and offer both psychosocial support and material support inform of food and non-food items,” he said.
He said coffins will also be issued to families unable to procure one to bury their loved ones.
The county government, he added, will also continue supporting the persons living in the streets and persons living in charitable institution to get the necessary documentation registration process to support issuance of national identification cards.
In this financial year, he said, 18 vulnerable homes have already been issued with coffins across the county so that they could give their loved ones a proper send off.
The county administration has been supporting the persons living in the streets and persons living in charitable institutions get Orthopantomogram (OPG) assessment at the County Referral Hospital.
The assessment looks at the different stages of molar teeth development and is meant to guide clinical estimation of ages for children and adolescents without birth records.
These records, he said, are then forwarded to the registrar of persons to assist with the registration process and issuance of national identification cards.
