A night guard was on Tuesday morning attacked and killed in a robbery at a supermarket at Chavakali market in Vihiga County.

The 47-year-old was manning Imara Supermarket when a group of robbers attacked them at about 4:30am on Tuesday morning, and left another guard nursing serious injuries.

Vihiga County Police Commander Hassan Barua confirmed the incident noting that an unknown number of armed thugs invaded the supermarket.

“They assaulted two night guards before gaining entry into the premise where they stole goods whose value is yet to be established,” Mr Barua said.

He added, “The thugs broke the back-door to the supermarket. Preliminary investigations indicate the armed robbers cut the victims using sharp objects.”

Police officers on patrol rushed to the scene before moving the body and the injured guard to the County Referral Hospital in Mbale.

It was the second time the supermarket has been attacked in under a year. Last year, robbers killed a customer in an attack.

The police boss issued a stern warning to individuals planning to engage in criminal activities, especially during the festive period.

“We have deployed enough security officers who are on high alert in all parts of the county,” he said.

Barua revealed his unit was working closely with members of Nyumba Kumi and Community Policing outfits in an effort to enhance security during the festive season.

“We have also lined up a series of public barazas aimed at creating awareness among the locals on security issues,” he added.

Speaking separately, a watchman at the market who sought anonymity, blamed the tragic death of their colleague on security lapses in the area.

“The market is dimly lit at night. The market is usually characterised by groups of idle youths, especially in the evening,” he said.
