Amani National Congress (ANC) party has unveiled its candidate for the Kibra Constituency by-elections planned for November this year.
ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi yesterday handed a direct ticket to Eliud Owalo.
Mr Owalo, who was Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga’s former adviser, defected to contest the seat on an ANC ticket.
“I am pleased to announce that we will be fielding a candidate in the November 7, 2019 by-elections in Kibra,” said Mr Mudavadi. “Owalo has joined us and we have presented him with a life membership certificate.”
Mudavadi said the party has continued to attract membership across the country is ready for 2022.
Ready for poll
“We are ready for the political competition ahead of us. We are entering the Kibra race very rejuvenated,” Mudavadi said.
“We shall award some of the political stalwarts who have joined our party since August 2017 with life membership certificates.”
He said a number of candidates who had shown interest in the party’s ticket to contest the Kibra seat did not follow due process while applying for the ticket.
This, therefore, led to the decision by the party to disqualify them. He said other potential candidates voluntarily pulled out to support Owalo.
Party leaders who accompanied Mudavadi said the Kibra contest will be the litmus test for the presidential contest in 2022.
While receiving the ANC membership certificate, Owalo told his supporters that he would liberate Kibra from poverty if elected.
ODM and Jubilee parties are yet to unveil their candidates for the by-election.
