Lesuuda disburses Sh28 million bursary to 7,000 students

More than 7,000 students in different learning institutions in Samburu West Constituency have benefited from Sh28 million bursaries. 

Speaking on Tuesday at Pastoral Centre while distributing cheques to students and school heads, MP Naisula Lesuuda (pictured) said all those that applied for the bursaries benefited. 

"A total of 7,311 students applied and none was left out," Ms Lesuuda said, as she urged parents to get birth papers for their children and register with the National Education Management Information System. 

Day secondary schools in the constituency received Sh5.57 million, boarding schools received Sh10.52 million while Sh8.27 was allocated to tertiary institutions. 

"Another Sh3.9 million was allocated to the neediest students as special bursary. We have disbursed a total of Sh28.19 million," the MP said.

Lesuuda urged school principals to ensure no student left the school unaccompanied when going for medical attention.

She said parents or guardians should be called to pick up sick students in case there was no one at the school to accompany them to health facilities.

"In some cases, students can pretend to be unwell and go engage in fishy activities. I urge all school managements to take this matter seriously to avoid cases of indiscipline."

The MP urged the national government to reintroduce a policy where selected schools received funds each financial year to construct laboratories. 

"This should be coordinated with the county education boards because they know the priorities of the schools."
