Court stops demolitions in Nambale town

A magistrate’s court has issued an order barring the county government from continuing to demolish structures in Nambale town to create space for construction of a bus park.

Already a number of traders have been affected after their kiosks were brought down.

Chief Magistrate William Chepseba restrained the county government from pulling down structures pending inter-partes hearing set for May 23, this year.

Mr Chepseba warned that should anybody who disobeys the order will be liable to imprisonment of a term not exceeding six months, a fine or both.

Yesterday the locals welcomed the court’s decision and slammed the county government for bringing down buildings whose owners have been paying land rates.

“It is unfortunate that county is acting with a lot of impunity because some of us have been paying land rates since 1978. It is good the court has come to our rescue by stopping further demolitions,” said Joshua Wekesa whose structures were on the line of destruction.

Small-scale traders whose kiosks were destroyed in Nambale town are now selling their merchandise besides the Busia-Mumias highway.
