CS Wamalwa tells counties to set up emergency funds

County governments have been urged to set aside at least 2 per cent of their annual allocation from the exchequer for emergencies.

Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa (pictured), while distributing relief food to victims of flash floods in Amoni and Akiriamas in Teso South, yesterday, said devolved units had the obligation of responding to emergency cases as much as the national government.

Last week, one person was swept away by flood waters, crops washed away and houses destroyed in Amoni and Akiriamas. “We must have proper plans to address emergency cases and this should start from counties,” said Mr Wamalwa.

He said emergencies were going to continue occurring in various parts of the country and thus needed proper planning.

The CS said the national government would put up dykes besides rivers Malakisi and Malaba to prevent water overflows that had caused havoc.
