Nakuru prepares for city status

The county government has appointed 19 new members to the municipality boards of Nakuru and Naivasha towns.

Governor Lee Kinyanjui (pictured) is pushing for Nakuru town to be elevated to a city. He hopes the new board members will make recommendations to both the county assembly and the Senate, for the town to achieve city status. 

He has also said he wants the Naivasha board to play a supportive role to Nakuru, as Nakuru marches towards city status. 

“The inauguration of the two boards is a key milestone toward us achieving city status," Mr Kinyanjui said in an interview. 

"I’m sure in three weeks, the Nakuru municipality board will hold its first sitting whose agenda is to recommend the elevation of Nakuru to city status.”

 The county has already ratified a Municipality Charter, establishing the two boards.

It has also embarked on a series of infrastructure development projects, that befit a town that aims to be elevated to a city.

According to Kinyanjui, already the county has received Sh1 billion from the World Bank through the Kenya Urban Support Program (Kusp).

The money is for improvement of drainage and other infrastructure in Nakuru and Naivasha .

“At least Sh350 million is being used for improving drainage in Naivasha, and another Sh150 million will build a market in the same town,”  Kinyanjui revealed.

He reminded the new board members that county residents have great expectations in them, and they should implement their mandate while being guided by the law.
