Inspector speaks on explosives

A policeman who arrested two suspects ferrying explosives told an Eldoret court that they were destined for Shauri Moyo estate.

Chief Inspector Daniel Cheboi testified Wednesday that he was on patrol on March 27 when he stumbled on Jim Odhiambo and Kennedy Omondi carrying boxes in two sacks.

Cheboi, who is stationed at the Huruma Police Post, told Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa that when he ordered the men to open the boxes, his first thought was that they were transporting illegal brews.

“Your honour, the boxes read 'explosives' and I found it weird since the items are a threat to national security," said the officer, adding that he promptly arrested the pair.

During interrogation at the station, Cheboi said, Omondi told him that he was idling at the bus stage when Odhiambo asked for his help to carr the sacks.

Odhiambo, on the other hand, said he received a phone call to pick the goods and take them to the estate.

Cheboi said the boxes had 338 explosives and detonating cords, adding that Adan Hassan from the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit also checked the items and confirmed that they were explosives.

The suspects' lawyers asked that their bond be reduced to Sh500,000 with one surety. The case will be heard on June 24.
