State targets TVETs in revamping textile sector

Kisumu National Polytechnic has received Sh1.2 billion from the Government to develop research that will rejuvenate the textile industry.

Speaking in Kisumu on Wednesday, Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Kevit Desai said the research should focus on the whole textile value chain.

He said it should begin from production of materials to the final fashionable product.

Dr Desai (pictured) noted that all TVET institutions should concentrate on building a curriculum that targets the development of the textile industry.

He argued that the industry had been on its deathbed for years, and that it was time TVET institutions played a role in reviving it. 

“The TVETs should be proud to be part of the revival and promotion of the textile industry through all possible innovative ways,” said Desai.   

He revealed that the Government plans to establish 15 new TVETs across the country. He also said the existing institutions will have their training capacity and equipment improved.

Desai said 2,000 new tutors would be recruited to address the shortage of TVET trainers.
