Machakos County achieved 93 per cent secondary school transition, official

At least 92 per cent of candidates who did their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations in the county last year have joined secondary school.

Machakos County Director of Education Shamsa Mohammed said the high enrollment in Form One is in line with the Government's 100 per cent primary to secondary school transition policy.

“The percentage we got is a good one, but we need to do more to achieve the target set by the Government,” Shamsa said during a meeting of all Machakos County secondary school heads in Mombasa.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua said co-curriculum activities should be given the same importance as academics.

“Education is not just books. We need to train our children to take part in co-curriculum activities because they are key in building capacities both in individuals and communities to enable them to participate effectively in socio-economic development," Dr Mutua said.

The governor also told schools to take agriculture seriously in order to become self-sustaining.

Mutua also suggested that a course on corruption be introduced in schools.

“We should incorporate corruption in our curriculum so that future generations can stop celebrating corrupt individuals and seeing them as their role models,” he said.
