At a corner of a homestead in Ngechek village, Nandi County, lies a fresh grave covered with bright, beautiful flowers.

It is the final resting place of Immaculate Jebet, a 13-year-old girl who took her life under unclear circumstances.

Jebet was buried last Monday in a tearful ceremony. She was a pupil at Isami Academy in Nandi County.

The family is yet to come to terms with her demise.

Jebet’s life ended abruptly on March 10 in a manner that has left more questions than answers.

Memories of the girl they all speak fondly of are still etched in their minds.

Looked calm

According to Edward Kosut, a cousin, her lifeless body was discovered hanging in the school dining hall.

"The day before she died, which was a Sunday, she did not look disturbed according to what we hear," said Mr Kosut.

He narrated that Jebet was at the time staying with a family friend, who works at the school. The family friend was among the people who found her body dangling from the rafters inside the dining hall.

"We learnt that she woke up at six in the morning and headed straight to the dining hall unnoticed. She had not put on her school uniform," said Kosut.

"Her colleagues called the family friend when the found her body hanging in the dining hall. They did not know that she was dead," he added.

Suicides is reportedly one of the leading causes of deaths among teenagers in the country.
