Kilifi youth attack assembly leader over mass causal workers’ sackings

A decision by the county to sack 1,500 casual workers has raised tensions with locals blaming the Assembly leadership.

On Thursday, a group of youth in the county confronted Assembly Deputy Leader of Majority Sammy Ndago (pictured).

They claimed that under Mr Ndago's watch, 16 MCAs on Monday passed a resolution that led to the sackings. 

The motion was tabled by Kayafungo MCA Alphonce Mwayaa and seconded by Kakuyuni MCA Nixon Mramba.

On Tuesday, hundreds of youth carrying anti-county government placards held a six hour protest in Malindi town.

They later went to the assembly's premises where they poured garbage 
 
Led by Sokoni ward MCA Gilbert Peru, the youth also presented a petition to the assembly seeking to have the sackings revoked.

Addressing journalists after the attack, Ndago blamed his woes on a section of MCAs. "Since the motion was passed, Kibarani MCA John Mwamusti and Mr Peru have been raising tensions. They are now inciting the youth," said Ndago.

He blamed the past regime for the high number of casuals. Many of them have worked at the county since 2013.
