Cherie Blair, the wife of former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair has kicked a cyber storm.
In a speech delivered in London about women and leadership, she claimed that “most African women’s first sexual encounter is rape.”
Naturally, Kenyans on social media reacted to Blair’s statement. While mosat of them criticised it, others didn’t take offence.
This who supported her said:
“Before we water down her point we need to ask how many African countries have experienced war, how many women and girls get raped? How many girls are raped by their own relatives and its covered up to keep family names 'clean'?”
“Unfortunately she is right”
“Sadly it might be true. Look at all the forced and arranged marriages.”
“Also, while 'most' may be the wrong one to use...you would be surprised at how large a percentage there is”
“Sad...but it’s quite prevalent in many local situations .... Many men in Africa think that having sex is their right!!... Also that sex makes you more of a man!!!.... To them it doesnt matter how you achieve this end even by violation, trickery, force or coercion.... It’s a big, big SHAME [SIC]”
