Police in Eldoret are holding two people believed to be linked to the killing of a university student.
The Education student at Moi University's main campus succumbed to injuries allegedly inflicted on him by a fellow student on Saturday morning.
Eldoret South OCPD Wilson Abduba said they have launched investigations into the killing of the fourth year student, said to have occurred inside a club outside the institution.
“We arrested two suspects; the individual who is alleged to have stabbed the young man using a broken bottle, and another who was with the victim,” he said.
According to witnesses who sought anonymity, the student was stabbed in the chest by his colleague following a confrontation.
They said the two disagreed after the victim accused his colleague of trying to steal his mobile phone at the club.
The students are said to have trooped to the club to make merry after the conclusion of an event at the university grounds.
Stolen phone
“Fracas started after the victim reported that the second-year had allegedly stolen his mobile phone, prompting his colleagues to rough up and beat up the student,” said one of the witnesses.
It is alleged that a fist-fight broke out in the club, attracting the attention of the friends of the second year student, who joined in the fray.
“Friends came to fight the fourth year students and that is when he was stabbed several times in the chest with a broken bottle,” another student said.
The student died as he was being taken to hospital. His body is currently at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
John Ayieko, the institution's Dean of Students, condemned the incident and called on the students to allow police to conduct investigations.
“We are relying on police to share with us the details of the death. In the meantime, I call on students to be calm,” he added.
