60 students of St Brigid Nangwe in Kabuchai Constituency were struck by lightning on Sunday night.
The students were said to have been going on with their evening preps when heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning struck.
The school Principal, Fransiscah Munyasia, said the students were struck while in class and rushed to Khalaba Medical Centre in Bungoma town.
Ms Munyasia said that 50 students were treated and discharged from the facility and returned to school while the other 10 remained in hospital for further treatment.
She said that the admitted girls were in stable condition and were responding well to treatment at the medical facility.
“The incident happened when the girls were conducting their evening preps. The lightning struck and certain girls started calling for help. We rushed those injured to hospital and 50 have been treated and returned to school,” she said.
Michael Milimo, a medical officer at the facility, said that those admitted had suffered burns but were responding to treatment.
“They suffered burns as a result of the lightning but they are responding to treatment and we are hoping that they will be discharged soon,” he said.
