Police are investigating the case of a Form Three student who was said to have committed suicide in a toilet at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital.
The 17-year-old had been admitted to the hospital on Friday complaining of pain in the stomach and vomiting.
Officials said they believed the student at a secondary school in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, killed herself after learning that she was pregnant.
According to preliminary findings, scans had revealed that she was nine weeks pregnant.
“This seemed to have shocked her and we believe it led to the unfortunate incident,” said an official.
The body was found hanging in the toilet on Saturday afternoon after she was reported missing from her bed.
Police were called and the body was taken to the mortuary after her parents were informed of the incident.
Reported missing
Kilimani OCPD Michael Muchiri said the matter was being investigated.
Hospital officials refused to comment on the matter and instead referred us to the communications official, who was not available.
The incident comes just weeks after a Form Three student committed suicide at Butere Girls High School in Kakamega County.
The girl's body was found hanging from the dormitory roof with a suicide note believed to have been authored by her.
Last year, there were several reports of students committing suicide, especially after national examinations results were released.
In December, a student in Kisii was said to have killed himself shortly after receiving his results.
