Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has ordered for the prosecution of those abetting pollution.
In yet another bid to regenerate rivers flowing through Nairobi, Mr Tobiko directed that individuals, companies and public institutions discharging raw waste into Nairobi River be charged for the offence.
He said pollution of rivers undermines realisation of universal health coverage and food security, which are part of the Big Four agenda. His directive comes after an inspection exercise found out that landlords and property owners in the informal settlements are emptying raw sewage into rivers instead of channeling it to the sewer line.
He found that crops and water consumed by residents along the Nairobi River Basin are contaminated with raw sewage.
