At least 25 passengers were Tuesday morning seriously injured when the bus they were traveling in was involved in a road accident along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Taita-Taveta County.
The self-involved 5am accident which occurred at Miasenyi area in Voi Sub County involved Tahmeed Bus traveling from Nairobi to Mombasa.
The accident brings to 34 the number of people so far injured in road accident along the highway in the past one week.
Nine General Service Unit (GSU) officers attached to State House in Mombasa City were also seriously injured in a road accident at Ndii area near Voi town.
Both Ndii and Miasenyi areas are regarded as major black spots in the country.
County Police Commander Halima Abdi confirmed and said the injured victims are being treated at the Voi County Referral and St Joseph’s Shelter of Hope hospitals.
The police officer said two accident victims had their hands amputated.
Ms Abdi said the bus skidded and later overturned critically injuring the passengers.
Voi Traffic Base Commander Michael Muriithi said five passengers were critically injured.
“The bus was overlapping another vehicle traveling in the same direction and in the process the driver lost control. The bus rolled several times injuring 25 passengers,” said the traffic police officer.
