The construction of a Sh3 billion international airport in Lanet, Nakuru County, will be done in two phases.

Governor Lee Kinyanjui told a stakeholders meeting held at Stem Hotel that the first phase will involve rehabilitation of the runaway, a fence, construction of taxiways and terminals, a military lounge, an air rescue centre and a fire fighting building.

The second phase will entail expanding the runway from 1.7km to 3.6km.

Former Nakuru DC James Mwaura will chair the liaison committee.

Mwaura asked residents of Ndimu-Nderitu village that neighbours the military airstrip to be realistic in their demands for compensation.

“I want to assure all that the compensation for land acquired for the expansion will be above board and in line with the laws,” he said.

The governor said technical officers will evaluate the land before compensation.

Officials from Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, Kenya Airports Authority and the Kenya Defence Forces attended. KAA official Leonard Muriuki described the location as ideal for an international airport.
