Four arrested with game trophies, contraband

Four suspects were yesterday arrested in Kilimani for illegal possession of game trophies and a number of untaxed items.

The three Chinese and a Kenyan were arrested in their house in Aberdares Court on Kayaya Road after neighbours complained of a foul smell coming from the residence.

Police who raided the house found ivory bracelets, a leopard skin and elephant tusks.

The specific number of items, however, had not been disclosed by the time of going to Press.

Nairobi Deputy County Commander Richard Kerich said they had detained the suspects and the contraband items.

Separate investigations

Mr Kerich said they were taking a multi-faceted approach with the investigation because different departments needed to conduct separate investigations.

"We are working with other sectors such as the Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Revenue Authority, the City Council and the public health department to fully investigate this case," said Kerich.

Among the goods seized by the police were bulky boxes containing alcohol and cigarettes, laptops, weighing scales, ivory jewellery and a tortoise.

Police said the source of the foul smell was a large quantity of rotten flesh, believed to be dog and game meat, which had been stored in freezers.
