A man is being held in custody at Eldoret East Police Station after his girlfriend died in a botched abortion and her body disposed of by the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
Joseph Kisina is said to have been living with Jane Wangare, the deceased, at Hawaii in Eldoret East Sub county in Uasin Gishu County after she left her mother’s home.
According to the police, the suspect took the deceased for abortion attempt, but went underground thereafter without leaving details of the next of kin.
The deceased is said to have been checked in at the hospital on August 23, and died two days later following the abortion.
“My daughter left home in August without informing me. She then went missing for two months. I later decided to ask from neighbours and her friends if they had seen her or heard from her,” said her mother Dorcus Wangu on phone.
“I was later informed that my daughter was living with a mechanic at Hawaii in Kimumu area. I then decided to go and check on her but was later informed that she was taken to the hospital by the mechanic,” she told the Standard.
“When I traced the mechanic, I asked him if my daughter was okay and her whereabouts but he said he had been busy and did not know how my daughter was faring on,” she said.
The deceased ’s mother decided to go the hospital to find out about her daughter. When she went for the first time she was told that she should check with the mortuary.
“It is only on the second day that I was given details of my daughter’s death. I was also furnished with her admission card and file number stating the date of admission and death,” she said.
The hospital explained to her that the person who checked her in did not give details about the next kin and the hospital decided to dispose of her body after two months in line with regulations.
She was then advised to seek help from the police. Wangu then went with the chief together with the village elder to report the matter.
Confirming the incident Eldoret OCPD, Richard Omanga said the police are waiting for a report from the hospital as investigations are ongoing.
“We are waiting for the report from the hospital about the cause of the death of the deceased and why she was being disposed without her family’s consent,” he said.
The hospital yesterday declined to comment on the matter, with an official telling the Standard that the hospital is looking for the girls’ file.
