CS Matiang’i flags off 100 vehicles for prisons

The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i Friday commissioned 100 vehicles which will be dispatched to various Prisons throughout the country.

He said vehicles will increase the efficiency of transport in the correctional service department, a challenge they have been facing for a long time now.

Speaking during the flagging ceremony, Matiang'i said that the move would modernise the prison sector as directed by the President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“The president demanded that we adopt a comprehensive approach to reforming the security sector and especially the correctional services,” said Matiang'i.

Matiang'i further added that the Government had embarked on a new programme that would see to it that the correctional services effectively utilizes resources allocated to them.

The President’s directive is that they form a multiagency approach so that all arms of the security service could work together and share resources.

The CS maintained that the new vehicles could also be used by the police service if they were in need of them.

“We need to share the resources that have been entrusted to us by Kenyans and ensure that they go a long way to offer the services that our people need,” said Matiang'i.

Matiang’i hoped that they could save more resources by decongesting the prisons. He said that they were working closely with the National Transport and Security Authority, the Inspector General of Police and the Ministry of transport to effect the transport fines so that they are able to reduce the number of remandees in the prison for traffic offences.
