Let’s maintain peace during polls to nurture our young democracy
NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga has claimed that the military, police and NSIS will be used by the Jubilee administration to rig the election. The country is in a new political dispensation and opposition leaders Raila, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetang’ula, Isaac Ruto among others should not use unorthodox means to win votes by claiming that elections will be rigged.
Still, the Constitution 2010 provides that the IEBC is an independent institution hence it is free from interference by the Executive. International observers and the Judiciary termed the 2013 General Election free and fair therefore perennial claims of rigging by Raila are merely wishful thinking. Kurgat Martin Seronei, Moi University
Praying for peace without addressing the root cause of violence is taking God for granted. Our leaders are the enemies of peace. It is the duty of the IEBC, the Judiciary and the Legislature (aspirants) and voters to ensure peace. If election stakeholders shun leaders out to incite them to cause violence then the exercise will be successful. The IEBC’s failure to handle votes with integrity and delay to announce election results could compromise peace in the country.
The Judiciary’s contradictory rulings can also lead to unnecessary tension while the police’s unprofessional handling of citizens could lead to rebellion and chaos. The aspirants’ refusal to concede defeat after a free and fair election and voters’ unruly behaviour at the voting stations can heighten tension in the country. Let us remain calm during the electioneering period. Polycarp Gogo, Kakamega
Schools have started closing ahead of the General Election. Whenever a photo of a crowd at a political rally is shared, children are always seen in the background. Primary and secondary students have no IDs or voters cards, but they are always present at campaigns. The rallies are too noisy and attended by rowdy individuals which could endanger their lives.
Let students not take political sides as it is not good for their social welfare. Parents should ensure children stay away from rallies for their own safety.
