Kaparo reigns in on Whatsapp admins,Kenyans react

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) boss Francis Ole Kaparo has warned people administering Whatsapp groups over the content they allow their members to generate and share across social media platforms ahead of the August elections.

The NCIC chair has also revealed that there are 21 identified Whatsapp groups that encourage incitement and that commission was keenly watching them.

Kenyans have however turned back to the commission accusing it of failing to tackle politicians and was now turning back to them.

Some have proved to believe the NCIC focus was an exercise in futility citing security features that are provided on the platform.

It appears the data encryption feature on Whatsapp could give a number sense of freedom to say anything they wanted thinking it is nearly impossible for their conversations to be accessed for scrutiny.

Some are seemingly joking about the move saying they could make everyone on the group accountable for the content they share by making them administrators.

Mr Kaparo warned that they could be forced to shut social media if need be.

As this happens, a 26 year old man has been charged in Eldoret with spreading hate speech on Facebook. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was freed on a Sh0.5 Million cash bail.
