Two people were killed in a fresh bandit attack in the volatile Ng'aratuko village in Baringo North sub-county at the weekend.

The two – an adult and a Standard Six pupil – were herding livestock when a group of armed bandits suspected to be from the Pokot community ambushed and shot them dead.

The bandits then drove away about 600 goats towards Tiaty.

Confirming the incident, Baringo County Police Commandant Peter Ndung'u said his officers were pursuing the bandits.

ANIMALS STOLEN

Mr Ndung'u said the officers were also working closely with local administrators to recover the stolen animals.

Tension is high in the area and hundreds of locals who had returned to their homes were now fleeing to safer places for fear of more attacks.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery had gazetted Arabal, Kiserian, Mochongoi, Rugus, Mukutani, Chebinyinyi, Komolion, Chepkalacha, Makutano, Paka, Orus, Loiywat, Silale, Nando, Tangulbei, Chepkererat, Kipnai, Ng'oron and Amaya as insecure areas.

A security team including regular and Administration police, and Kenya Defence Forces soldiers was then deployed to the region in March.

The deployments came after several attacks by suspected bandits that left 11 people dead.
