The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital has returned close to 35,000 identification cards that were being held as security for unpaid bills to their owners.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Wilson Aruasa further clarified that the hospital no longer takes ID cards as collateral from patients who are unable to pay bills.

He was reacting to a story published in last week’s Financial Standard titled How Huge Medical Bills are Crippling Millions of Families that indicated that the hospital was still holding on ID cards.

Dr Aruasa said they had returned over 34,494 ID cards to their owners besides waiving 50 per cent of the outstanding bills for the affected clients.
