Mombasa County is the second biggest town in Kenya, after Nairobi County. It receives millions of visitors every year. Now, the county has the Mombasa Municipal Stadium, which has nurtured many sporting careers and hosted many local and international events.

It has been a pivot point in primary and secondary school games. Most political meetings have been conducted in the municipal stadium as well. Some athletes started their big journey from the stadium.

Most football matches - local and international – are played out in the county stadium.

Children too visit the grounds for sports and cultural activities. That said, what message do they get when they witness such a gory sight when they visit? Residents who have been around since the 1990s have fond memories of the stadium and remember with nostalgia an organised and clean place.

Today however, a visit to the town‘s stadium reveals the shocking reality that the arena is now used as a dump site.

What picture are we portraying by tossing rubbish both inside and right outside the stadium, even as foul smell fills the air? Are there no workers mandated to clean the pitch that is used by so many?

Let the county government ensure that the stadium remains clean and fit for various activities. Let it reclaim the famous stadium‘s glory.
