AG Muigai needs support from Kenyans

Reports of a plot to edge out Attorney General Professor Githu Muigai on grounds that the current administration is not pleased with him for his strict application of law are disturbing.

These, especially coming after Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners were hounded out of office.

Nobody seemed to have solid evidence on the wrongs they were accused of. It was clear that most of the accusations were politically driven.

In any case, laid-down legal procedures for their removal were sacrificed at the altar of political expediency.

Due to this reason, the planned removal of Mr Muigai from office, just because he has not acted according to the whims of the Government of the day is unconstitutional, a blatant violation of the rules and regulations of a democratic country.

We must not allow the entire country to be driven by the will of a small clique of individuals. We must put an end to crucifying a few individuals who are faithful to our constitution by hounding them out of office.

In the current administration, Muigai has done his duty of advising the Government on implementation of the law, and whether these are beneficial to the people of the republic of Kenya.

There is no doubt Muigai played a crucial part in making sure that all Kenyan leaders who were facing prosecution in the International Criminal Court (ICC) came back home.

We must also accept that Muigai carries a heavy burden of responsibility. He is answerable for any violation of the Constitution by the government.

The Constitution of Kenya must be respected by all, however, mighty or small. If Muigai is guilty of violating it, then he must take responsibility, but if he has been faithful to Kenya’s supreme law, then we must rally behind him against powerful political forces.
