Skimming through the hookup section of newspapers nowadays, you will most likely see a young man in his early 20s looking for a sugar mummy. Gone are the days when this ilk of young men would go about this deplorable life covertly. They do call radio stations and unashamedly declare that they want a financially stable woman, and oddly, old enough to be their grandmothers.

Social media pages have taken the hint and started advertising women looking for young men. Most of them are well endowed both bodily and financially, as the pages claim, and are looking for ‘strong young men,’ for sex in exchange for money. Some will claim of 'successful businesses' or that their husbands are away.

I asked myself several questions as to how an energetic man would go the route of sponsors. Being a patriarchal society, we’ve almost accepted that young girls need the sponsors. But not young men. They are supposed to sweat off to put food on the table. By sweating off I don’t mean atop [or whatever position] a wrinkled and flabby skin.

There are limitless opportunities in which young men can earn money. The internet alone has endless possibilities. The only thing a person needs is to be sharp minded or being able to spot them where others don’t. Even farming has been proved to be the most profitable venture lately.

Just as our politicians have perfected the art of making money from doing less, young men are following suit. The only disadvantage is that they don’t have access to billions of shillings hence engage in such behaviors.

These young men can cite unemployment for this trend or lack of opportunities. But the truth is everyone has equal opportunities. It depends on who works hard and smarter. I am a firm believer of the biblical parable or whatever it was, knock and it will be opened ask and you will receive.

The other reason for this trend is the rise of young women looking for sponsors. I heard an argument of a lady talking about mot accepting 30k from a man. She wanted nothing short of 100k. This will surely demoralize a young man looking for love from an age mate. I mean where would someone get 30k for a lady, considering that your rent which a third of it is giving you sleepless nights?
