Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has pledged to support Kenya's most populous primary school, Bungoma DEB Primary School. Dr Matiang'i, who finally visited the school yesterday after The Standard highlighted their plight, promised a number of goodies for the institution.

The school in Kanduyi constituency which was established by colonialists in 1953, is operating way beyond its capacity with a population of 3,236 pupil's with only 51 Teachers Service Commission employed teachers.

Matiang'i called on the head teacher Tobias Khisa and the board of management Chairman Martin Nyongesa to send their proposals to his office so that he can work on it.

The CS who accompanied the area MP Wafula Wamunyinyi said the ministry will help construct a number of classes to cater for the huge population.

"I have heard the plight facing this school from your MP and also read about it on newspapers. Send your proposals and I will act on it immediately. I want learners to learn in a good environment," he said.
Wamunyinyi applauded the CS for visiting the school and noted that the institution will now benefit from ministry's assistance.

"I have used about Sh5.2 million Constituency Development Funds in developing this school but it still faces a myriad of challenges ranging from lack of enough class rooms, land for expansion and inadequate teaching staff among others," said Wamunyinyi.
